Bamboo flooring - What is it?

Bamboo flooring becomes more popular. It has unique natural character and is an excellent choice for your home or office. Botanically, bamboo is a grass (not a wood at all) which after full growth before harvesting is denser and stronger than traditional hardwoods.

It's one of our most renewable resources, because it matures in approximately three years, replaces itself every 5-6 years providing food, employment and housing. When bamboo is harvested, the root system is unharmed and healthy and is ready to produce more shoots.

Bamboo flooring is different to traditional hardwood flooring with unsurpassed elegant style, durability & exceptional beauty. Bamboo is similar to sugar cane and is coloured by a steaming process during manufacturing, like burning the sugar or caramelizing in cooking terms. This process sets the colour so that later when you do need to re-sand the colour remains the same. It is not a stain but 'carbonised' or if you like colour all through the boards.

You can choose vertical, horizontal, natural or carbonized bamboo flooring. All of them will be very hard and dimensionally stable. Bamboo flooring is rated harder than red oak. New pre-finish bamboo floors offer simple installation, durability, and ease of cleaning.

Bamboo flooring can be factory finished or raw. Finishes can be Matt, Semi-Gloss, High-Gloss ready to walk on after installation. Raw unfinished bamboo flooring boards good for those who like the traditional method polishing on site, these boards can also be waxed or tung oiled.

The properties of bamboo flooring such as rapid regeneration, strength and durability, termite resistance and many more make it a serious alternative, saving our Australian forests for future generations.
