Carpet Flooring

Carpet Benefits

There are different benefits to having carpet flooring in your home:
  • Carpet flooring is comfy and cosy - No cold feet from walking on a carpet! No splinters from sitting on a carpet!
  • Carpet flooring can provide sound insulation and create a calmer, quieter atmosphere in your home. It reduces surface noise from foot traffic and absorbs sound from both within the room and between floors.
  • Carpet flooring gives you a safer, gentler, non-slip surface which can prevent accidents and is a natural cushion in the event of a fall - especially important when you have babies or toddlers around.
  • Carpet flooring is actually much more hygienic than you may think. The presence of airborne dust is far lower in carpeted rooms because it actually traps allergens and dust particles which are easily removed with regular vacuuming.
  • Carpet flooring is easier and more affordable to have fitted and replaced than most other floor coverings.
  • Carpet flooring unlike other floor coverings, do not always require a perfectly level surface, saving you money on potential new sub-floor treatments.
  • Carpet flooring and underlay not only provide another layer of padding to your home, but also act as an extra layer of insulation lowering your winter fuel bills.
  • Carpet flooring is available in a huge variety of colours, patterns and textures, enabling you to make it the main focus of a room or the perfect foundation for all your furniture.

Carpet Fibre

There are four main types of carpet flooring: Nylon, Polyester, Polypropylene, Wool. Each type of carpet flooring has its own unique qualities, ideal for different kinds of uses and applications.

The most popular residential carpet flooring is cut-pile/twist. Twisted pile is created from yarn which has been twisted tightly together. The loops are then cut in order to achieve its textured appearance.

Other styles of carpet flooring: trackless, plush, frieze, or shag.

Most of these styles are constructed of either nylon or polyester fiber. Both of these fibers can produce quality products, but your individual needs will determine which fiber is best for you.

Nylon carpet fibre

  • Nylon gives products strength and durability.
  • Nylon usually costs more than polyesters.
  • Nylon alone has no stain protection, so it must be added. Popular stain prevention systems applied to nylon carpets: Scotchguard, Stainmaster and Weardated.
  • Nylon fibers usually have extended warranties and you will most likely pay a premium for them, but it is well worth the money.

Polyester carpet flooring

PET : The best known polyester is PET (made from recycled plastic bottles). Everstrand or Xylon: Polyesters also have branded fiber names like Everstrand or Xylon. Polyester is much more accepted now, and manufacturers don’t try to disguise the fiber type so much as in the past.

Polypropylene carpet flooring

Polypropylene also called olefin, is another popular carpet fiber.
  • Polypropylene carpet flooring is the cheapest.
  • Polypropylene carpet flooring is the weakest (has very poor memory, and can mat down easily). Olefin works fine when constructed properly.
  • Olefin's advantage is that it is solution dyed (color was added to the fiber while it was still a liquid). Solution dyed carpet fiber can be cleaned very aggressively without hurting the original color.

Wool carpet flooring

Aanother quality carpet fiber is wool. It is a product made from 6"-8" fibers which are spun together. Most wool carpet is very high-end, but there is some very cheap wool carpet available. You may find very high-end wool carpet flooring styles that are woven instead of being tufted. Most woven carpet is very nice, and very expensive. Wool carpet flooring can offer you quality if this is the right choice for you.
