Ceramic tile is made of clay and shale that has been baked and hardened in a kiln.

Tiles can be:

glazed (with fused facial finish)

more resistant to stains

unglazed (with no surface glaze):
- color produced from the tile's composition and added pigments
- better to wear
- more slip-retardant because of the natural surface.
