Laminate Flooring

Laminate Flooring - What is it?

Laminate flooring made of layers fused together using direct pressure laminate (most common construction for residential use) or high-pressure laminate (an extra-hard construction):
  • Wear layer: provides easy-to-clean surface - contains aluminum oxide which protects the floor from stains, fading and wear.
  • Image design layer: provides the look - a photographic image of wood, stone, or anything you can imagine.
  • Inner core layer: provides the floor's structural strength and stability - made from high-density fiberboard.
  • Backing layer: creates a moisture barrier that protects the floor from warping - found beneath the inner core, made with resin saturated paper.

Laminate Flooring - Durability and Repair

  • In terms of durability - a quality laminate flooring is one of best flooring options (due to good inner core stability and a tough wear layer).
  • It should last 15 to 30 years.
  • If it does scratch, it can't be resurfaced like hardwood can.
  • Filler sticks (special pencils made by the manufacturer) can be used to conceal chips, gouges and deep scratches.
  • Replacement of the damaged laminate flooring can be a tricky job that's best left to an installation professional.
  • Exposure to water can damage laminate flooring, so if you choose to clean with water, make sure to use a damp mop
  • Sand and grit can damage laminate flooring, remove dirt regularly with a vacuum that has a wand attachment, or dust mopping.

Laminate Flooring - "YES"

  • Provides the realistic look of wood, tile or stone at a lower cost
  • Easy to install
  • Extremely durable and far less apt to scratch than wood

Laminate Flooring - "NO"

  • Cannot be refinished like wood
  • Shorter life expectancy than natural products (genuine stone, ceramic and other natural materials)
